Air conditioning – commercial units are different from residential
Many people think that commercial air conditioning units are just like the ones you’ll find in a typical home, except maybe larger. While some of the more expensive home air conditioners have similarities to commercial units, there are still big differences.
The main difference is that commercial air conditioners need to be designed to handle almost continuous operation, and they need to be able to cope with constant movement of people arriving and departing (every time a door opens, some thermal efficiency is lost).
Smart architects design commercial buildings with buffer zones to mitigate the thermal efficiency losses – one technique, for example, uses two sets of entry doors, preferably with a lateral offset – but such techniques can only be partially effective. It is up to the air conditioning system itself to be able to detect and correct temperature problems. Home air conditioning units just aren’t built to handle these situations because they don’t need to be.
This is why commercial air conditioning units tend to cost more than those designed for home use, but that extra investment is worth it because of the better quality, improved technology, and more robust internal components.
When possible, it’s best to choose rooftop commercial air conditioning units
Having your HVAC system installed on the rooftop provides numerous benefits. This won’t be a practical solution in every setting, but it is the solution you should request if it is possible to install at your location.
One of the biggest advantages is security. When the air conditioning units are installed on the roof, it means somebody has to go to all the trouble of climbing up to the roof in order to vandalize or sabotage your air conditioner. Sure, your insurance will probably pay for the damage, but what about the inconvenience that can be caused to visitors and workers when your air conditioner is offline?
Rooftop air conditioning units can also be as much as 40 percent more energy efficient than wall or ground mounted units, plus there is evidence that they are better for the environment.
Another advantage is that you will find roof mounted units are less noisy to the interior of your building, and that’s always a good thing. Also rooftop systems tend to be more compact, making efficient use of space. You can expand your system easily as your needs increase, and you don’t have to replace all of the underlying air conditioning infrastructure when you do that with a roof top air conditioning unit.
